The racecourse of Cumberland was based at Allegany County Fairground in the state of Maryland and first opened its gates to thoroughbred racing in 1924, although records indicate that harness racing took place on a 1/3rd mile track near Main Street as early as 10th October 1868 on what is now the site of Greely Junior High School. It was known in its early days as Fairgo Racetrack before becoming Cumberland. The track was very popular with Maryland punters who also went to Malboro and Timonium as part of the Maine Sire Stakes series of races. The 4 furlong oval track first held floodlit racing on 28th September 1949. The course closed in 1961, after which it sold its race days to other tracks, although racing of a different kind in the form of motor racing then took place at the circuit. However, harness racing continues to form an integral part of the Cumberland Fair, with up to 8 days of racing at the end of September. |
